In fact, it's been around for at least half a century! When this method is used correctly it is extremely effective in over 90% cylinder type locks. As with any other lock picking technique it requires some time and patience to be able to master. A bump key is a key in which all the cuts are at the maximum depth (999). Bump keys can be cut for standard pin tumbler type locks as well as "dimple" locks.

 Steps

Make sure the key you use fits inside the lock you intend to circumvent. In most cases, a particular model of lock will accept all keys from that model because only the teeth of the keys are different. In other words: Once you have a Acme-model bump key, it could open all other Acme-model locks.

Obtain a bump key. There are two ways to produce a bump key: One way is buy the type of key for the model lock in question and ask the locksmith to lathe a "999" key, a kind of key where all the valleys are at the deepest possible setting. Asking for a 999 key might be considered somewhat dubious.

Cut your own bump key. Have a copy of the key in question made, then use a metal file to create your own bump key at home. Simply file all the valleys down so that they are even with the lowest point in the teeth. If you do this, the bump key may not necessarily open all locks for the corresponding model because a different lock may need a key with even lower valleys.

Insert the key into the lock, then strike it with a hard object. Immediately after (almost simultaneously) the "bump," turn the key. With proper timing, the lock should open.

 Tips

For easier help go to http://www.youtube.com/ and search "How to make a bump key" and watch the videos that come up, they should help you way more.

Bumping works best on high-quality locks because the tumblers and cylinders move more smoothly.

Almost all locks operate the same way: Tumblers are pins are cut in two at different points. When you insert a key into a lock, the teeth raise and lower the tumblers to different heights; if you're using the right key in the right lock, the divisions in the tumblers match-up with the cylinder in such a way that the top parts are outside the cylinder and the bottom parts are inside, allowing the lock to turn freely. When you bump a lock, the energy from the strike is transferred from the key, to the bottom half of the tumblers, and finally to the top parts of the tumblers which jump above the cylinder so the lock can turn.

If you want to go undetected, place a small strip of soft, shock-absorbent material on the top edge of the key where it physically touches the lock. Otherwise, when you bump the key, it could dent the lock.

 Warnings

Breaking and entering and trespassing are illegal. Don't go anywhere you aren't legally supposed to be.

 Things You'll Need

A key that fits into the lock you want to open.

A triangular metal file

 Related wikiHows

How to Pick a Lock

How to Crack a Master Combination Lock

How to Break a U Lock

How to Change a Lock

How to Fix a Sticky Lock

 Sources and Citations

YouTube - How to Bump a Lock

http://lockbumping.org/

Lockpickshop.com

Article provided by wikiHow, a collaborative writing project to build the world's largest, highest quality how-to manual. Lock

from wikiHow - The How to Manual That You Can Edit

Locked out of your house in the middle of the night? Lost the key to the padlock on the shed? Lost the only key to your bike lock? Before you pay a locksmith to let you in or to open something up, consider picking the lock yourself. Most locks around the home or office are simple pin-and-tumbler locks and can be relatively easy to open using a pick and tension wrench, both of which can be improvised from common household items. While the process is simple and can be mastered with practice, picking such a lock requires a great deal of patience. If you’ve got some spare time and enjoy a challenge, though, why not give it a try?

 Steps

Understand how your lock works. You must first find out how a lock works. Scraping the side wall of the lock is your number one priority. When scraping the side wall of the lock you insure that you click or unlock the pins in the lock. The pin and-tumbler lock consists of a cylinder that can rotate within its housing (see illustrations below). When locked, the cylinder is kept in place by several pairs of pins. The top pin of each pair protrudes into both the cylinder and the housing, thus preventing the cylinder from turning. When the correct key is inserted, it pushes the pairs of pins up so that the top pins no longer enter the cylinder. When this happens, the cylinder can be turned and the lock will open.

Note the five pairs of pins. The blue pins enter both the cylinder and the (green) housing around it, thus preventing the cylinder from turning. The springs provide resistance to keep the pins in place.

When the key is inserted, the grooves and ridges on the key push the pins up to the correct heights so that all the blue pins are completely out of the cylinder, thus allowing the cylinder to turn and the lock to open.

Get a pick and tension wrench. Each pick is specialized for a different problem. A tension wrench, or torque wrench, is the device with which you apply pressure to turn the lock cylinder. Professional-grade picks and tension wrenches can be purchased in sets (see picture), but many lockpicking hobbyists make good quality sets of their own. See the Things You'll Need section below for information on how to make your own picks and tension wrenches.

Place the tension wrench into the lower portion of the keyhole.

Determine which way the cylinder must be turned to unlock the lock. If you commonly use the lock, you probably already know which way you turn the key to open the lock. If you don’t know, use the tension wrench to apply torque to the cylinder, first clockwise and then counterclockwise. The cylinder will only turn a fraction of an inch before it stops. Try to feel the firmness of the stop. If you turn the cylinder the wrong way, the stop should feel very firm and stiff. If you turn it the right way, there should be a bit more give. Some locks, especially among padlocks, will open regardless of which way the cylinder is turned.

Apply light torque to the tension wrench in the correct direction, and hold. The required torque will vary from lock to lock and from pin to pin, so this may require some trial and error. Start gently, though.

Insert the pick into the upper part of the keyhole and feel the pins. With the pick in the keyhole, you should be able to press up and feel the individual pins with the tip of the pick. You should be able to push them up and feel them spring back down when you release the pressure.

Find the most stubborn pin. While still applying torque, lightly press up on each pin, one at a time. Try to push each one all the way up. Identify which one is the hardest to push up. If they are all very easy to push up, turn your tension wrench more to increase the torque. If one won’t go up at all, ease the torque until you can push it up. Alternatively, you may wish to “rake” the pins before this step (see Tips below).

Push the stubborn pin up until it “sets.” Press the stubborn pin with just enough pressure to overcome the downward pressure of the spring. Remember, the pin is actually a pair of pins. Your pick is pushing against the lower pin, which in turn pushes against the upper pin. Your goal is to push the upper pin completely out of the cylinder. Then, when you stop pushing, the lower pin will fall back down into the cylinder, but the torque on the cylinder will result in a misalignment of the hole in the cylinder with the hole in the housing, and the upper pin should then rest on the cylinder without falling back down. You should hear a faint click as the upper pin falls back down on top of the cylinder. You should also be able to push the lower pin up a little with no resistance from the spring—when this occurs you most likely have the upper pin “set.”

Continue applying torque and repeat the last two steps for each of the remaining pins. It is imperative that you maintain torque on the cylinder to prevent the set pins from dropping back down. You may need to make slight increases or decreases in torque for each pin.

Use the tension wrench to turn the cylinder and unlock the lock. Once all the pins are set, you should be able to turn the cylinder. Hopefully you have already ascertained the correct direction to turn it. If you have chosen the wrong direction, you will need to start over and reset all the pins.

 Tips

Lockpicking enthusiasts generally frown upon paperclips, safety pins, and the like. The argument against these improvised tools is that they are far more difficult to use than specially made picks. While this is generally true, these can be quite effective with practice and patience.

A technique called “raking” or “scrubbing” can be used as a shortcut. To rake the pins, insert your pick (preferably a rake pick or paperclip with several bends) all the way to the back of the keyhole without applying torque to the cylinder. Then quickly pull the pick out, raking it upward against the pins while simultaneously applying light torque with the tension wrench. Theoretically, you could pick a lock just by raking it once or twice, but generally raking will only set some of the pins, and you will need to individually set the remaining pins.

Lockpicking is really all about the tension wrench. You will constantly need to find and hold just the right amount of torque to allow you to push the upper pins out of the cylinder while ensuring that pins set and stay set.

You can’t see inside a lock very well, so use your hearing and sense of touch to try to figure out what’s going on in there. Be patient and methodical, and pay attention to faint clicks you may hear and the resistance you feel. With the information you gather in this way, you can visualize the inside of the lock.

Apply just enough pressure to the pins to overcome the friction and spring forces. You don’t want to jam the lower pin between the cylinder and the housing.

Lockpicking has become a popular hobby for those who enjoy solving puzzles. If you want to pursue this hobby, it’s best to practice with a very simple, cheap lock, or even a lock with all the pins removed except for one.

Other types of locks (wafer-tumbler, tubular, etc.) can also be picked, but require slightly different procedures.

Some locks are “upside down” (especially in Europe): the pins are located at the bottom of the cylinder instead of the top. The procedure for picking these locks is the same, except that you push the pins down. If the lock is opened by inserting the key upside down (with the serrated edge facing down) the pins are on the bottom. Once you insert your pick into the keyhole it will be easy to tell whether the pins are located on the bottom or top.

Sanding your picks smooth will make it easier for you to slide them in the keyhole and maneuver them.

The number of pins varies from lock to lock. Padlocks often have 3 or 4, while door locks generally have 5-7.

The pins will often set either in the order of front-to-back or back-to-front; it will take a little experimentation to find the correct direction for your lock. While back-to-front is probably the most common order, you could need to start somewhere else.

 Warnings

If a pin won’t budge when you try to push it up, you probably are applying too much torque so that the cylinder is too greatly misaligned with the hole in the housing. If this is the case, you’ll need to release some of the torque. Doing so may cause pins to fall that are already set. Unfortunately, there’s no way around that. Try changing the order of your picking on your next attempt.

When done properly, lock picking does not harm the lock, but if you apply too much torque to the cylinder or too much pressure to the pins, there is always the risk of damaging the mechanism.

In some jurisdictions, possession of lock picks is a crime, even if the picks are improvised and even if you have no criminal intent. Be aware of the laws in your jurisdiction.

It is illegal to pick at someone else's lock without their permission.

 Things You'll Need

Tension wrench (Many common objects can be used as a tension wrench, provided that they are strong enough to apply pressure to the cylinder and thin enough to just barely fit in the end of the keyhole (you don’t need or want the wrench to be so thin that it goes all the way in the keyhole). The tension wrench should also be small enough to afford you plenty of room to maneuver the pick when they are both in the keyhole. You can use a small allen wrench that you file down at the end or you can just use a thin-tipped flathead screwdriver.

Pick(s) (You can use a safety pin or a paperclip. To make a pick from a paperclip, straighten the paperclip and then bend it 90 degrees very close to one end. Alternately, you may bend one end into a tiny loop. Needle-nose pliers make bending the paperclip much easier. Make sure whatever you choose for a pick is sturdy, or you will not be able to apply enough pressure to push the lock’s pins up without your pick bending.)

 Related wikiHows

How to Crack a Master Combination Lock

How to Open a Lock Using a Can

How to Kick Down a Door

How to Burglarproof Your Doors

How to Bump a Lock

How to Hang a Door

 Sources and Citations

Lockpicking101.com A forum for lockpicking enthusiasts—ask a question or just browse through the questions and answers on just about anything you’d want to know about picking locks. also www.mylockpicks.com,www.pickinglocks.com these are 2 very good sites for beginners

Lockpickguide.com How to make and use lock picks

Article provided by wikiHow, a collaborative writing project to build the world's largest, highest quality how-to manual. You could call a locksmith or cut the shackle, but you may be able to quickly and easily open it with a shim, a thin piece of metal that you slide into the locking mechanism. You can buy shims for anywhere from $2-20, or you can make them with metal you have laying around the house. Here’s how to create and use a shim made from an aluminum can.

 Steps

Get a good can. You can use just about any aluminum soda or beer can. The only requirement is that the sides of the can be smooth (without ridges), since you will be using the metal from the sides to make the shim.

Empty the can completely and rinse it out with warm water.

Use scissors, tin snips, or a knife to cut off the top and bottom of the can. Cut right at the border of where the sides taper at the top and bottom. You may want to use a knife or razor blade to make a small starter cut in the taper so you can easily get your tin snips or scissors in. Try to make your line as straight as possible, but don’t worry about it too much, as you will trim them later. To maximize the metal you have to work with try to avoid cutting too much into the flat part of the can’s side. Instead err on the side of the taper.

Cut a straight vertical line down the side of the can. Try to make your cut as straight as possible—many cans have a “seam” that you can use as a guide. You want to be able to flatten out the piece of metal into a rectangle.

Clean it up. Now that the can is easier to work with, trim the top and bottom to get rid of the rough edges. If your metal still has some sticky residue on it, scrub and rinse it off with warm, soapy water, and rinse off your cutting tool, as well.

Cut the metal rectangle in half with a line running the long way of the rectangle. Divide the metal into two long strips.

Cut the strips to into squares. You should be able to make four or five squares, each about 1.5-2 inches on each side. Make sure the edges are smooth and straight.

Use a marker to divide the squares in half. You should have two equal rectangles.

Cut an M-shaped design on half of the square. You want to create the point of the shim by cutting out two humps a little bit in from each side of metal (see picture). Try to make the cuts as smooth as possible, and try to get rounded humps as opposed to pointed triangles.

Fold the uncut part in half. The fold should bring it down just above the humps of the “M”. This will be your handle.

Fold the outside flaps of the M up over the piece you just folded down. Bend them back and away from you over the handle piece.

Use pliers to crimp the handle.

Shape the shim. You want to round the shim so that its shape fits the lock shackle. You can do this by bending the shim around the shackle itself, or you can shape it around a pen or pencil (as long as the pen or pencil doesn’t have ridges). Your shim is now finished.

Use the shim on a padlock. Some more advanced locks will require you to use two-one shim on each side of the shackle.

 Tips

What works better than a can is a metal clothes hanger that has been flattened with a hammer... make it just flat enough so it can fit into the lock and only flatten half an inch of the tip. first pull down on the lock and then put the shim in on the right side of the shackle on the inside then push the lock up while jiggling the shim, then push down again on the lock. repeat pulling the lock down and up with pressure on the shim until the lock pops open

Using a shim takes a bit of practice. It’s easy to bend them or tear them in the small space between the shackle and the locking mechanism, and it can be hard to get them into position. Fortunately, you can make many shims out of a can, and once you get the hang of it, the process will become much easier. Just don’t try to force anything, because if you get a piece of the shim stuck in the lock, it will make your job even harder.

Some locks require that you insert a shim into both sides of the shackle (both holes where the shackle enters the lock). If you can't seem to get your lock open with one shim, try two.

Commercial shims come in several different sizes, each specialized for locks of different sizes. You can simply adjust your cuts if you find that you need a larger or smaller shim than the one produced with these instructions.

These shims, like all shims (even those produced commercially) will eventually wear out. If you’re very careful not to bend, tear, or otherwise damage your shims you will probably be able to get 4-5 uses out of each one.

Tin snips are the easiest tools to cut the aluminum with, but you can also use scissors or a knife. If you use either of the latter tools, however, use some that you can afford to destroy, because cutting the metal may dull them significantly.

Shims can also be made with a variety of other household items, including the metal pieces on 3.5” floppy disks and scrap pieces of sheet metal.

Take your time when cutting your shims. The straighter and smoother your cuts, the better your shims will work. You’ll also be able to make more shims per can if you’re careful with your cuts.

Not all padlocks can be opened with shims, particularly those with a double-ball locking mechanism. Most older locks, and many of the cheaper newer locks can be opened, however, so give it a try before you resort to cutting a lock or calling a locksmith.

These shims also work well on combo locks if the tip of the shim is rounded rather than being pointier

 Warnings

Don't use these shims to open locks that do not belong to you unless you have explicit permission from the owner to do so.

Be extremely careful when cutting the shims and when handling them to open a lock as the edges of the aluminum can be razor-sharp, so you can easily cut yourself. Also be sure to exercise caution when using your cutting tools.

In some jurisdictions possession of shims is illegal, even if there is no illegal intent. Be sure to know the laws in your area before constructing or carrying shims.

Carrying shims in public is illegal because in some laws they are considered weapons.

 Things You'll Need

A lock to open

A smooth-sided aluminum can

Tin snips or scissors

Needle-nose pliers

 Related wikiHows

How to Pick a Lock

How to Crack a Master Combination Lock

How to Burglarproof Your Doors

How to Change a Lock

 Sources and Citations

I-hacked.com A tutorial on making shims

Article provided by wikiHow, a collaborative writing project to build the world's largest, highest quality how-to manual. If the lock isn’t locked onto anything, you can make a photocopy of the serial number and send that into Master Lock for the combination. If, however, your lock is attached to something, you can break the lock, call a locksmith, use a shim, or figure out the combination. Of these options, only the last will leave you with a usable lock without emptying your wallet. Unfortunately, there are 64,000 possible combinations on a standard 40-number Master Lock. With this method, however, you can quickly narrow that down to 80 combinations, a workable number to try if you’ve got the time and the inclination to give it a shot.

 Steps

Look for the Master Lock brand. This method only works with Master Lock combination locks, and may not work with all of them. It is rumored that Master Lock changed the combination algorithm on some of the newer locks, in particular those with serial numbers starting with the number 800. Some people, however, have reportedly had success cracking these with this method, too, so it may be worth a try. Check the discussion page for this article to check which serial numbers others have had success with.

Turn the lock’s dial clockwise to zero. It is a good idea to turn it at least three rotations first, just to make sure it’s clear.

Apply steady tension to the shackle and turn the dial clockwise. The shackle is the u-shaped part of the lock that goes around whatever you’re locking. To apply tension you can either pull the shackle up while holding the lock, or you can pull the lock down if the shackle is locked onto something solid. Turn the dial slowly as you apply tension. If you can’t turn the dial at all, release the shackle and turn the dial clockwise just a number or two and then try it again.

Find the first sticking point.

As you turn the dial clockwise with tension on the shackle, you will come to a point where you can’t turn the dial anymore. Make note of where it stops. Sometimes it will stick right on the numbers, but sometimes it will be between the numbers. If so, record the number to the half (e.g. 22.5, 7.5, etc.).

While continuing to apply tension to the shackle, turn the dial as far left (counter-clockwise) as you can. Make note of where it stops. Now you have a sticking "range."

Determine the sticking point by finding the number that's in the midpoint of the sticking range. A range of 4 and 5 would have a sticking point of 4.5. A range of 22.5 and 23.5 would have a sticking point of 23.

Release shackle tension and turn the dial slightly past the sticking point. Turn the dial clockwise about one number from the sticking point in order to allow you to "escape" that sticking point.

Reapply tension to the shackle and continue turning the dial clockwise to find all the sticking points. You should find a total of twelve sticking points in one complete turn of the dial. Write them down.

Find the third number of the combination.

Look at your list of sticking points and eliminate all those which are not whole numbers (i.e. cross off any number that ends in .5). You should eliminate 7 of the 12 numbers with this step.

Of the remaining sticking points, choose the one with the unique digit in the "ones" position. Four of the remaining five numbers will share the same number in the "ones" place, so for example, if the numbers left on the list are 4, 14, 24, 27, and 34, the number 27 is the only one which does not have a four in the "ones" place. This is the third number of the combination.

Find the magic number. Divide the third number of the combination (27 in this case) by four and write down the remainder. In this case 27/4 = 6 remainder 3. Remember we are only concerned with the remainder, which will always be 0, 1, 2, or 3. Write down the magic number (3 in this example).

Find the possible first numbers of the combination. Add 4 to the magic number (3). Write down the result (7). Now add 4 to that and continue adding 4 to each resulting sum until you have gone completely around the dial once. Write down each of these numbers. Thus, for the example above the numbers would be 3, 7, 11, 15, 19, 23, 27, 31, 35, and 39. One of these numbers is the first number of the combination.

Find the possible second numbers in the combination. If your magic number is 0 or 1 then add 2 to it, otherwise subtract 2. Since our example magic number is 3, we subtract 2 and get 1. Write down the answer and add 4 to it. Now add 4 to each resulting sum until you have gone completely around the dial once. Thus, in the example, the numbers would be 1, 5, 9, 13, 17, 21, 25, 29, 33, and 37. One of these numbers is the second number in the combination.

Cross out the numbers (the possible 2ND numbers) Plus or Minus 2 [25 & 29] from the third number of the combination[27].

Figure out the correct combination by trial and error. You now know all the possible first numbers [3, 7, 11, 15, 19, 23, 27, 31, 35, 39], all the possible second numbers [1, 5, 9, 13, 17, 21, 25, 29, 33, 37], and the third number [27]. You’ve just narrowed down 64,000 combinations to only 80. Now try each combination until you find the correct one. If you’re lucky, you may need to try only a few but then again, you may need to try all 80.

 Tips

After cracking just one lock, the system becomes much easier to understand, so hang in there.

If you’re in a hurry, you don’t need to calculate the possible first and second numbers yourself. Once you’ve figured out the third number, you can save time by using a special computer application to determine all the possible combinations. See the External Links section below.

Though not necessary, you may find it helpful to write out the combinations methodically so you don’t forget which ones you’ve already tried in the middle of the next step. Thus, you could make a chart with all the combinations (3-1-27, 3-5-27, 7-3-27, etc.)

This will work only if you get the 12 numbers: 7 decimals, 4 integers with mutual "ones places" and one integer with a unique digit in the ones place.

Only consider proceeding with this method if you enjoy a challenge. Otherwise, cutting off the lock and buying a new one makes more sense.

You can also drill a small hole in the back of the lock (next to the master key) so that you can view the tumblers. After you align the tumblers, and determine the unlock code, you can seal the hole with a two-part epoxy.

 Warnings

Do not use this technique to crack someone else's lock without permission of the owner. If you do that, you are breaking the law and could be prosecuted accordingly.

When finding the sticking numbers, be very precise because otherwise you won't get the correct numbers.

 Related wikiHows

How to Pick a Lock

How to Open a Door With a Credit Card

How to Open a Lock Using a Can

How to Burglarproof Your Doors

How to Change a Lock

How to Bump a Lock

How to Remove a Knobset Lock

 Sources and Citations

Master Lock Lost combination form and procedures

Downloadable calculator - Gives you all the possible combinations once you enter the third number.

Video of the process in action at MetaCafe.com

Article provided by wikiHow, a collaborative writing project to build the world's largest, highest quality how-to manual. A slick protagonist needs to explore the bad guy's abode, so he whips out a card, wiggles it in the crack of the door, and strolls right on in. However, in real life, it's not a universal lock pick technique, nor is it legal (if you don't have permission to enter). But, it is a pretty cool thing to know how to do, especially if you find yourself locked out of your own home!

 Steps

Choose your largest, most easily flexible credit card. You may want to use something other than a credit card if it's more flexible and disposable (such as gift cards, membership cards, or any other plastic laminated cards - fake credit cards that you get in the mail are perfect).

Slide the card into the vertical crack between the door and the frame (where the lock is) as far as it will go at a perpendicular angle with the door.

Tilt the card so the side that's closest to you is almost or is touching the doorknob. Push it until you feel it slide in more.

Bend the card the opposite way, forcing the lock to go back. Quickly open the door.

 Tips

An alternative method is to push the card between the door and the frame, as said above, then pull and push at the doorknob while applying pressure on the card. This will pry the lock open eventually, but takes a bit of time, and causes more damage to the card.

Some doors require very little effort, and may be opened by simply pushing a card into the door frame at the same height as the handle (without the above tilting or bending).

Instead of using a credit card, you can also use a strip of plastic cut out from a plastic soda bottle for extra length and flexibility. This also has the added benefit of not ruining your card.

This technique won't work:

If you are on the side of the door that the lock is not slanted towards, the only way to open it with a card may be to cut it into a wide "U" then hook it around the lock and bend it as described above.

If the door has a quality lock that is properly installed. Most doors have a special tab that sticks alongside the latch to prevent picking with a credit card. If you can get this tab to drop into the hole that the rest of the latch goes into, then the door is improperly installed and this method will work.

If the door is an exterior door with an additional deadbolt lock - deadbolts cannot be picked with a credit card and require picking the lock or kicking down the door.

If the door has trim around it that will prevent you from opening it with a card. Either remove the trim or find an alternative method of opening the door.

All else failing, you can still use your credit card to open the door by hiring a locksmith. Many are available 24/7 and take credit cards.

 Warnings

There is a chance that you may do damage to your credit card. If possible, use a less valuable card such as phone card or grocery card instead.

Be very careful not to let your card slide through the door jamb and get stuck on the other side.

Be prepared to show proof that you have the right to open the lock, or you might find yourself behind the sort of locked door that a credit card won't open!

This is a technique to use when you accidentally lock yourself out. Do not use this technique to break into premises to which you do not have permission to enter! You won't enjoy being charged with trespassing or "breaking and entering".

Do not use I.D. Cards, especially if you failed to heed the previous warnings. If it gets stuck on the other side of the door, you will have a lot of explaining to do.

 Related wikiHows

How to Pick a Lock

<a href="http://www.wikihow.com/Crack-a-%22Master-Lock%22-Combination-Lock" title="Crack a "Master Lock" Combination Lock">How to Crack a "Master Lock" Combination Lock

How to Make a Padlock Shim

How to Keep Track of Your Keys

Article provided by wikiHow, a collaborative writing project to build the world's largest, highest quality how-to manual.
